Standard Vocabularies

I create the list (it looks like a regular index with some brief instructions on when to post a term at more than one synonym or make cross-references) and then pass it on to you for the subject matter experts to review. They know better than I do how different subjects may relate to each other or not within the scope of your documentation. There can be multiple passes in the review process; it's up to you how much fine-tuning you want to do.

I've developed standard vocabularies for the following clients:

  • Nokia—In conjunction with on-site and remote indexing training sessions for technical writers, I developed a standard vocabulary list based on a cross-section of device user guides to help the writers streamline and standardize terminology for their indexing process. I have updated this vocabulary once sine 2007 in order to keep up with the latest features for cell phones and PDAs.
  • Apple Servers—In consultation with subject matter experts, I developed a standard vocabulary list covering the material from all the user and technical guides for Mac OS X servers, to help the writers use more consistent terminology in their indexing process. Since the first creation in 2006, I have updated this vocabulary two times to keep up with the ever-changing list of "cool" tools that server technicians have to provide for their clients.
